Tantangara Reservoir is located north-east of Lake Eucumbene, not far from the township of Adaminaby. To reach Tantangara Reservoir you drive through Adaminaby, from the Cooma side, and then travel along the Snowy Mountains Highway, past the Providence Portal turn-off, then a further 4 km to the Tantangara turnoff on the right. It is then 18km of gravel road to the dam wall. Water levels in Tantangara have been very low for a number of years. However, there are still good populations of both Brown and Rainbow trout and fish around the 10lb mark have been caught! All methods of fishing are permitted. As with all alpine lakes, Tantangara can deliver blizzard conditons, with snow and high winds, at any time of year. Temperatures of minus 16 degrees celcius have been recorded! Exercise extreme caution when driving around Tangtangara, even in a 4WD, especially when the lakes levels are low, (frequently). Many a vehicle has become bogged when venturing onto the numerous tracks around the foreshore. |
