Tumut Pondage was formed in 1958, when the Tumut River was dammed as part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme. It is situated 8 kilometres from Australias highest inhabited township of Cabramurra, at which lies at 1488 metres altitude. The lake is situated 72km from Khancoban. This waterway holds mostly smaller size brown and rainbow trout with the odd 2kg plus specimen. All fishing methods are permitted, but trolling is the most productive. Leadlines and downriggers are successful in summer. There are no boating restrictions and there is a gravel boat ramp, best suited to smaller boats, located not far from the dam wall. For the bait fisher, try mudeyes or worms.
