Eucumbene River

The Eucumbene River is an alpine river starting its’ flow high above the old gold mining town of Kiandra. It is a larger river that holds very big fish! The Eucumbene River may only be fished with fly or lure, i.e. no bait fishing is allowed. It is a declared ‘trout spawning stream’ meaning a bag limit of one fish per day, per angler, with a minimum keeper size of 50cm. Once the bag limit has been realized the angler may continue to practise ‘catch and release’. The only other river in this region in the same category is the Thredbo River

The higher sections of the river are true alpine country, so be prepared for all weather, even snow in summer! The alpine section of the river provides some very picturesque scenery and a number of sections of the river in this area are easily accessible by car.

Above Lake Eucumbene, at Providence Portal, the river provides outstanding fishing in autumn, (April/May), when the brown trout mass, prior to commencing their spawning run and again in Spring, (October/November), when, on the October Long Weekend, the river again opens for fishing.
Late Spring and summer provide the best dry fly fishing on the Eucumbene. When the Eucumbene leaves the Eucumbene Dam it is really only fishable at Nimmo Bridge, where it crosses the Nimmo Road, on route to the Gungarlin River.
